Bernina or Baby Lock?

I've got to start saving my pennies. I have my eye on this baby:

Or maybe this baby:I am really interested in learning how to do embroidery. I have a friend who has the Bernina Bernette Deco 340 and she loves it. She says it is great to carry to class because the arm goes into the machine with a push of a button so you do not have to worry about hauling it around and breaking it.

I also like the Baby Lock it is so pretty and I have heard great things about the company. But the disadvantage is that you are required to take the arm off and carry it with you which could result in breaking it which would keep the machine from working. An advantage is that it has a larger sewing field but with that comes a larger price.

So I'm going to start saving my pennies and hopefully have enough money by the Fall Quilt Festival in Houston (I'm so lucky to live 30 mins away) so I can get one of these beauties. That way I can play with both of them under one roof and decide which one I like better!

If you have any experiences with either of these embroidery machines please let me know!

  4. I think Bernina's disadvantage is that it doesn't use the same language as the other embroidery machines and therefore it limits the embroidery images you can use on it where the other machines all speak the same. This is what i have heard from others though I am not into machine embroidery myself. I heard a lot of people like Brother machines for embroidery too....

  5. I have the Bernina 440 QE and the embroidery arm that goes with it. I LOVE it. It is great for quilting with its free motion quilting foot and the times I have used it for embroidery, its worked great too. The big difference I know if is that you have to use a laptop hooked up to the Bernina to do the embroidery where I think most other machines are all in one. I'm not sure if its better or worse, but its been fine for me. I actually use an old laptop of my husband's from his college days for it.

  6. Thanks Tyra great suggestion! I just looked up the model you suggested and I actually like it. It does actually come with a USB port now. I'm certainly going to add this one to my list to try out.
